Standard 1: Learner Development
The teacher understands how children learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
It is always a challenge to accommodate the learning needs of every student. In a music classroom, it can be difficult to encourage the idea of “ensemble togetherness” when some students are exceeding expectations and others are struggling to keep up, especially with younger students. However, it is one of the responsibilities of the instructor to have solid background knowledge in the way students develop mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. This knowledge, combined with the ability to apply it to each individual student, is necessary to create an engaging atmosphere that is challenging, but does not let any student fall behind.
During my time at Ball State, I have taken course in developmental and educational psychology. These course have opened my eyes to the wide variety of challenges that students may be facing, as well as the ways I could adapt my classroom to fit the learning needs of those students. I know that this is an area where I will continually grow and learn in throughout my time as a teacher.
I will continue to grow in this area through real-world experience with a variety of age groups. I will reflect on the knowledge I already have and how it fits in with my experiences. This will allow my experience and knowledge to grow together and become more unified and, more importantly, applicable in my classroom to benefit the students.
