Standard 10: Collaboration
The teacher collaborates with students, families, colleagues, other professionals, and community members to share responsibility for student growth and development, learning, and well being.
Collaboration in a music classroom is critical. Because music is dying out in public schools, there are a lot of programs out there, band, orchestra, choir or any other kind of ensemble, that require the support of students, their families, and the community, otherwise, they cannot function. A music instructor’s ability to help others, such as their students and colleagues, and look to others for help is inevitable if the students’ best interests are truly at heart. This could be something as simple as asking another directors opinion of your ensemble, then offering your opinion on their ensemble, or even asking parents how they hope their child can benefit from participating in music.
I very much hope that in the future of my career, I will have somebody that I can collaborate with in the instruction of my students on a regular basis. But as of now I think that I am very capable in this standard. I am confident in my ability to work well with anyone else that wants to reach the same goals as I do. I have already had opportunities to work with many other educators, specifically in the realm of marching percussion and feel that these have been invaluable experiences that have helped me understand what it takes to work with other people. An important idea that we discussed in MUSE 375 is that the things we do in the band classroom affect more than just the students. What happens in the band classroom is often reflected to the parents and the community. Music is meant to be shared between people, and it is a team effort for everybody, including the students, the director, the parents, and the community.
In the future, in order to improve myself in this area, I will continue to strive for collaboration with as many people as I can. In my future teaching experiences, I will strive to surround myself with people who are genuinely looking out for interests of the students and look for their thoughts on things they have seen as it relates to me and my teaching.
Below is a video of an indoor drumline group that I had the pleasure of working with, where I worked primarily with the front ensemble. An indoor drumline show of this scale cannot be created by one person alone. The team of educators, instructors, parents, and administration that I collaborated with in this organization were wonderful and helped me understand what it means to work as one piece in a much larger "whole."
