Standard 8: Instructional Strategies
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
How well students can retain information is very heavily influenced by the strategies a teacher employs to convey that information. For example, students are more likely to learn from a lesson if they have to apply the information to something else and see for themselves what results from the application. Strategies like this are great for music educators because music is something that requires the students’ involvement to actively apply received information to whatever they are singing or playing. Because music has a degree of complexity of the subject matter within it, the instructor has an opportunity to employ many different kinds of teaching strategies to yield a positive learning experience for both students and the teacher.
During my time at Ball State, I have learned many strategies that can be employed to help students learn. The wonderful thing about music is that once a student learns a skill, if the curriculum is well-designed, there will almost immediately be an opportunity for meaningful application. If students learn about the F minor scale, we will play a piece that is in that key. If students learn about triplet-based rhythms, we can play a piece that uses triplets. That is something that I feel makes music very unique in an education system. There aren't many subject areas that can give students immediate application quite like it. In my MUSE 375 class, we discussed strategies to employ in the classroom throughout the semester. The strategy that we focused the most on was the macro-micro-macro strategy. I can now see the usefulness and application of this kind of approach.
In the future, I will use my membership in professional organizations, specifically NAfME, to expose myself to new, creative teaching strategies. I know that there are so many wonderful and experienced teachers in this organization that I can learn from. Access to NAfME's online publication is also an excellent resource that I intend to use for years to come.
