Standard 6: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to document learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s ongoing planning and instruction.
The importance and practicality of this INTASC standard is exemplified brilliantly in a music classroom. The teacher’s ability to assess, and then decide what to do based on that assessment is possibly the most important driving force behind the direction any kind of music program will go. Some common forms of assessment are playing tests or watching a group of students sing or play together to get a general idea of how well the students understand the content in your lesson. From the information that the instructor gains from these assessments, they will be able to decide whether it is time to move onto new content and address new weaknesses, or go over previous content again (in a new way) to make sure that students can correctly apply the skills and knowledge they have learned.
I feel that I have a good understanding of how assessment functions in a classroom and how it should inform decisions I make concerning the curriculum. In my MUSE 375 class, we discussed ideas concerning assessment. There were several models of assessment that we read about that broadened my thinking concerning the possibilities and application of assessment. Assessment should be used to help make students aware of how they are doing in class, so that they know what they need to improve on in their practice time.
I feel that the best way for me to continue improvement in the area of assessment is to maintain communications with my colleagues, both in and outside the field of music. I have a network of fellow teachers who can help me think of new and creative ways to assess my students accurately and practically. I will also be able to discuss with my administration about ways they would like the students to be assessed so we can meet the needs of as many students as possible.
